BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE IN ENGLISH

In the Tretayuga, on his way back to Ayodhya after Ravana's death, Rama took rest on SUMANTHA hills of this forest area of Ravivalasa along with his army and followers. Sushenudu who was a divine doctor in the Rama followers, felt happy and wondered on seeing the Medicinal plants and barks around in this forest but, however,  the people were not healthy and were suffering . He wanted to do something good to the people. He expressed his desire to stay on this hill and do TAPASSU (Penance) for Lord Shiva. Rama granted permission and left for Ayodhya leaving Sushena here. Sushena worshipped Shiva for many years and used to serve the people around with the Medicinal plants. As he was not able to bear the separation of  Rama, chanting Rama namam,  he died on the Sumantha parvatham.

After some years, Rama sent Hanuma to inquire the whereabouts of SUSHENA. Hanuma (Anjaneya) came to Ravivalasa hills SUMANCHA and found skeleton/dead body of SUSHENA. He thought that SUSHENA was dead and buried the skeleton, after putting some jasmine flowers (Malle pulu), and covering with deer skin. Hanuma returned to Ayodhya and told every thing he had done. Rama, after hearing the sad news came to this SUMANCHA HILLS along with Sita, Laxmana, Hanuma. Hanuma lifted the deer-skin to show the skeleton to Rama and Rama tried to insert his hands to uncover the buried body of Sushena under the Jasmine flowers, but found the body of Sushena converted to Shiva Linga on his contact in side the heap of Malle-pulu (jasmine flowers), instead of body of the SUSHENA. All were astonished and shocked. 

They took a bath in the nearby pond and started worshiping the Shiva-linga. As they started doing the pooja the Linga began to grow till the end of the pooja. Air flowing down the linga with breeze from the medicinal plants, giving good health to the people. As it is growing, Rama did not build any temple there. The name from Jasmin = Malle, deer skin = Aajinamu, so a linga worshiped with MallePoolu and covered with deer skin = Mallekajina Swami and it was modified to MALLIKAJINA Swami. The pond Named as SEETHA KUNDAMU.

The history of the temple can be traced to the Mahabharata period. Legend has it that Pandavas while in exile visited this temple and met Markandeya Maharshi, who appraised them of the importance of the Ravivalasa shrine. Later, Arjuna did thapassu (worship) to this linga. Lord Shiva gave dharshan and asked about his desire. Arjuna requested Shiva to keep his name along with Lord name. Later on Mallikajina swamy became Mallikarjuna Swamy.

On Maha Sivaratri and Kartika Mondays, large gatherings of devotees worship this temple's deity. Tarla's family used to worship for over hundred years to this lord (vamsha parampara dharma karthalu) before it is taken over by the State Government's Endowments department. It is strongly believed that the lord will bless the people and fulfill all their desires, promote health and wealth in their lives and remove sins. Lord is worshipped by people from West Bengal, Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

శ్రీశ్రీశ్రీ ఎండల మల్లన్నగా పేరు పడిన ఇక్కడి దైవం మల్లిఖార్జున స్వామివారు. ఈ దేవుని దర్శించినవారికి దీర్ఘరోగాలు ముఖ్యముగాచర్మరోగాలు పోయి పూర్తిగా ఆరోగ్యవంతులవుతారని భక్తుల ప్రగాడనమ్మకం.

 క్షేత్ర  ప్రశస్తి

శ్రీరాముడు రావణ సంహార అనంతరం తిరిగి అయోద్య కు వెళుతూ మార్గమధ్యంలో కల మహారణ్య ప్రాంతములో కల సుమంచపర్వతగిరి శిఖరంపై తన అనుచరగణంతో విడిది చేసాడు. అనుచరగణంలో ఉన్న సుశేణుడు అనే దేవవైద్యుడు ఆ పర్వత ప్రాంతములోకల ఔషద, మూలికా| వృక్షజాతులను చూసి ఆనంద పరవశుడయ్యాడు. కాని చుట్టూ ఔషదాలున్నా అక్కడి జనులంతా రోగగ్రస్తులైఉండుట అతనిని ఆశ్చర్యపరచినది. ఈ ప్రాంత ప్రజల ఆరోగ్యాది ఈతిబాధల నివారణార్ధం తను ఏదైనా చేయలని తలంచాడు. బొందితోకైలాసం చేరుకోవాలనే తన పూర్వవాంచితము నెరవేర్చుకొనుటకు కూడా ఇదేమంచి ప్రదేశముగా అతనికి అనిపించినది. శ్రీరామునికితన నిర్ణయాన్ని తెలియపరచి తను ఈ సుమంచ పర్వత ప్రాంతంలోనే తపమాచరించాలనుకొంటున్నట్లుగా చెప్పాడు. శ్రీరాముడుఅతని వాంచితం నెరవేరాలని ఆశీర్వదించి తన పరివార, అనుచరజనాలతో తరలి వెళ్ళీపోయాడు. తరువాత సుశేణుడు సుమంచపర్వతంపై శివుని గూర్చి ఘోర తపస్సు చేయనారంబించాడు.

కొంతకాలం తరువాత సుశేణుడు ఎలా ఉన్నాడో క్షేమసమాచారాలు చూసిరమ్మని హనుమంతుని పంపించాడు శ్రీరాముడు.హనుమంతుడు సుమంచ పర్వతప్రాంతానికి వచ్చి చూస్తే అక్కడ సుశేణుడు కనిపించలేదు కాని అతని కళేభరం కనిపించినది.సుశేణుడు తపమాచరిస్తూ శివసాయుజ్యం పొందినట్టు భావించి అక్కడ ఒక పెద్ద గొయ్యి ఏర్పరచి సుశేణుని యొక్క కళేబరమునుఅందులో ఉంచి గొయ్యి పూడ్చి అక్కడ దొరకిన మల్లెపూలను ఆప్రదేశంలో ఉంచి దానిపై జింక చర్మాన్ని కప్పి శ్రీరామునికి విషయాన్నిచెప్పేందుకు వెళ్ళీపోతాడు. హనుమ ద్వార విషయము తెలిసిన రాముడు సీత, లక్ష్మణ హనుమలతో కలసి సుమంచ పర్వతానికివస్తాడు. సుశేణుని కళేబరమును రామునికి చూపుటకు జింక చర్మాన్ని పైకి లేపుతాడు హనుమ. జింక చర్మం తీసేసరికి అక్కడకళేబరం స్థానములో శివలింగము ఉంటుంది. దానిపై పువ్వులుంటాయి. శ్రీరాముడు సీతా లక్ష్మణ సహితుడై ప్రక్కన గల కొలనులోస్నానించి శివలింగాన్ని పూజించుట ప్రారంబించగానే ఆ శివలింగము క్రమముగా పెరుగుతూ ఆ ప్రాంతాలలో ఔషద,మూలికలసువాసనలతో కూడిన గాలి శివలింగాన్ని తాకి ప్రచండ పవనాలుగా మారి వీచినంత మేర అందరికీ అనారోగ్యాలు మొత్తంగాతుడిచిపెట్టినట్లుగా పోవడం, ఒకరకమైన శక్తి తేజస్సు రావడం గమనిస్తారు. శ్రీరాముడు ఈ శివలింగానికి గుడి కట్టాలని అనుకొన్నాఅది పెరుగుతుండటంతో ఆలోచన విరమిస్తాడు.

అప్పటి నుండి ఈ శివలింగము పెరిగి పెరిగి మహాలింగముగా ఆవిర్భవించినది. మల్లెపూల తో పూజింపబడి జినంతో{చర్మం} కప్పబడీఉన్నపుడు వెలసిన స్వామి కనుక మల్లికాజిన స్వామిగా పిలువబడుతుండేవాడూ. క్రమముగా మల్లికార్జునినిగా మార్పు చెందినది.

శ్రీరాముని తరువాత ద్వాపర యుగం లో అజ్ఞాతవాసం చేస్తూ పాండవులు ఇక్కడికి వచ్చి అప్పటికి సీతా కుండముగాపిలవబడూతున్న అక్కడి కొలనులో స్నానించి స్వామిని పూజిస్తూ అక్కడ కల గుహలో కొంతకాలం నివసించినారు.

దేవాలయ చరిత్ర

1870 ప్రాంతములో టెక్కలి జమిందారు శ్రీ బృందావన హరిశ్చంద్ర జగద్దేవ్ దేవాలయము నిర్మింపగా అది తొందరలోనేకొంతకాలమునకు శిదిలమైనది. మరికొంతకాలానికి ఆలయనిర్మాణమునకు పూనుకొనగా స్వామి భక్తుల కలలో కనబడి తనకుఆలయము వద్దనీ వాతావరణ మార్పులలో ఆరుబయట ఉండటమే తనకు ఇష్టమనీ అదే లోక కళ్యాణమనీ తెలియజేసాడు. దానితోదేవాలయ నిర్మాణము విరమించుకొన్నారు.

ప్రతి సంవత్సరం కార్తెకమాసంలో ఇక్కడ కల సీతాకుండములో స్నానం చేసి భక్తితో స్వామిని కొలిస్తే సర్వవ్యాదులునివారించబడుతాయని విశ్వసిస్తారు. ఇక్కడ మహాశివరాత్రి, కార్తీకమాసము విశేషంగా ప్రత్యేక పూజలు నిర్వహించబడతాయి.కార్తీకమాసంలో ఇక్కడ కల అశ్వర్ధ వృక్షం క్రింద గడిపేందుకు, స్వామిని దర్శించేందుకు లక్షలాదిగా భక్తులు తరలి వస్తుంటారు.ఉత్తరాంధ్ర జిల్లాల నండి చాలా మంది భక్తులు ఈ ఆలయ దర్శనానికి వస్తూ ఉంటారు. రాష్ట్రము నలుమూలల నుండి కూడాయాత్రికులు వస్తుంటారు
