Danta Puri - Buddhist Monuments

Danthapuri, also known as Danthavarapukota or Danthavarapuri,  is one of the important Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh.

Danthavarapuri is a village situated on the way from Amadalavalasa to Hiramandalam in Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is about 10 km from Amadalavalasa, 22 km  away from Srikakulam Town. Ancient Buddha stupas are present in this place. It is believed to be a place of Buddha religion and a shiddhardas living place. It is an important archeological place, called Boudha Gynana dantha puri, where the archeological department found some bricks, pots, Mens wear, terracotta articles, bangles, beads, stone and iron articles etc.

It was made Capital City in BC 261  by Maurya Emperor Ashoka., who defeated the Kalinga Kings in the battle. They treated this place as capital of their region for many Centuries. During this Rule, A Buddhist Monk, Arhat Kheru Terudu, who collected one of the  Boudha Gyana dantha (Tooth), presented the same  to a Kalinga King named Brahmadatta Raja . Subsequently, Brahma Datta Kalinga Raja constructed a monument for Boudha Gyana Dantha in this place and hence the place is called Danthapuri.
